Sermons of Hwy. 27

Here are some more sermon signs from along Hwy. 27 between Georgetown and Monticello. I guess the writer was trying to be cute with the spelling on the second sign and the top word in the bottom sign is NO. All the letters for all these signs are snipped from tin, except for the word EXIT in the last one. He recycled another sign for that word. This series started on Sept. 7.

Sermons of Hwy. 27

I am fascinated by a ministry along Hwy. 27 between Georgetown and Monticello. He or she has or had been called to post religious messages along the roadside. Just little notes, really. I have seen them for years but only took the time this past weekend to document all of them that I could get to. I would like to talk to whoever did this, but I couldn't find out any information. There is a small place on the road where many signs appear, it looks like what was a campground and picnic area, and I will show those at the end of the series. But for the next few days, may I present the Sermons of Hwy. 27.

Mont Helena church

The old church at Mont Helena near Rolling Fork is one of my favorite places to visit and photograph. This piano is the reason why. It sits in the shell of the old building, but still looks majestic to me. I don't know why the people who own the place have let it stay in there for so long. Or why it has not been stolen or torn to pieces. I believe it is a testament to the spirit of the old church that it lingers. Just a reminder that this was once a vivacious place of worship. The old building doesn't have much longer for this world as gravity is fixing to overcome it. But I believe the old piano will stand to the end. It's only fitting, I guess.

Shall We Gather....

The outdoor baptismal pool at St. John M.B. Church in Panther Burn, MS, has not been used in quite a while. It's right by the road on U.S. 61. I bet when a baptism was held here, it was a head-turner for those going down the road.

Various photos

Some various photos I have taken in the last couple of weeks. The church at Grand Gulf is still hanging on. Each time I go I expect to see it caved in. The old rocker is at the dogtrot cabin located on the grounds of the Grand Gulf Military Park. The gravestone among the canes is located in the Grand Gulf Cemetery. The Holsum bread sign and the Coca-Cola sign are on an outbuilding at the Old Country Store in Lorman. The bottom photo is of a lotus plant getting ready to bloom at Hamilton Lake in Claiborne County.

Go Saints

A fleur de lis adorns a grave fence at the Grand Gulf Cemetery. Rust has been gnawing at this ornament for many a decade, but its beauty still shines through. There's a lesson there....

Cannons of the Vicksburg National Military Park

Here are some of my favorite photos of cannons in the Vicksburg National Military Park over the past few years. I think each and every one is glorious. What once were instruments of destruction are now monuments to a time of bitter divide in our country. May we learn from each of them.
