Lamar Life Building

Can anyone explain the faces and weird corner statues that overlook the City of Jackson from the Lamar Life Building? The two bottom photos are what greet you at the front door.

Inside the Fairgrounds Armory

On the State Fairgrounds in Jackson is an old brick building back in the corner. It was beautiful in its day. It was an armory but has seen use as a basketball court and also has a stage at one end. But now it is falling in and used as a room for...well, junk. Mother Nature will finish her off soon.

More scenes from downtown Jackson

Some other scenes from downtown Jackson, including the menu of the Mayflower Cafe, a parking meter (just don't see these much anymore),  the State Capitol, a bar near the Capitol, the Naval Reserve Building (which has seen better days), and some railroad spikes along the railroad tracks that run on the south side of town.

The murals of Farish Street

I took my photo buddy Robert Walker over for a tour of Jackson early Saturday morning. We started on Farish Street. The street is right across from the recently renovated King Edward Hotel. I  hope that renovation continues down Farish Street in the future. That's been talked about for years, however, but not much has happened so far. The building featured at top is right near the King Edward and I just love these shots. Trying to figure out a symbolism angle for the kudzu growing through the windows, but I haven't quite got it yet. Peaches Cafe had just opened for business for the day while we were down there and the Open sign was just a-flashing. And the Alamo is an iconic Jackson location and must be saved! Some folks at one time or the other tried to beautify the empty buildings along the street with murals, such as the one you see in the photos at top. I'll show some more of those next.

The relief is located across the entrance to the Mississippi State Capitol in Jackson!

A mystery....for most

Here's a mystery for most of you. Where is this relief located? Some of my buddies over at the Mississippi Preservation blog will get it right away, so maybe they can hold off at least a day before answering! I will provide the answer on Monday morning.

Rambling around Rolling Fork

Robert Walker and I rambled all around Rolling Fork last weekend. We can't get near that place without running by Mont Helena. I was in a sepia mood this past weekend and took this shot of the majestic house on the Indian Mound. Also pictured is what looks like a handmade cross on top of the Episcopal Church in Rolling Fork. The bird atop it literally had a bird's eye view of Deer Creek. The magnolias look pretty spectacular in sepia. Never would have thought so, but I was so wrong! The rest of the photos are from the inside of the Big Red Barn in Rolling Fork, including the massive hay loft. It's so big you could probably land a small plane in that space. I can only imagine what it looked like when it was filled with hay for the draft horses who resided below. This building is awesome. I am glad Robert and I took the time to shoot more photos here because on this trip back the house that sat upon the grounds has been knocked down. Also missing is an old gas pump that stood in a small field across the dirt road from the barn. No worries. I have lots of pictures of both.
