Freeland Cemetery

A visit to Windsor Ruins in Claiborne County is not complete without a visit to the historic Freeland family cemetery, which lies in the woods not far from the majestic homestead. The ancestors of Tom Freeland, a fellow blogger and lawyer in Oxford, Mississippi, reside here. Visit his wonderful blog at http://nmisscommentor.

It is a beautiful old cemetery, sitting up on an Indian mound surrounded by a brick fence covered in green lichen. The last photo with the moss-covered brick is my favorite, just for the vividness of the green. The builder of Windsor is buried here.

Windsor Ruins

My photo buddy, Robert Walker, and I ventured down to Windsor Ruins this Saturday. It was overcast and gloomy, but the photo opportunities were bright! I have shot photos at Windsor Ruins numerous times and you can see the results at www.martykittrell.com. This time I shot what I call tighter photos of the ruins, concentrating on views around corners and up close photos. I love finding new angles and hit the jackpot on this day. What a glorious place this is, a true Mississippi treasure. I will show you some more photos of Windsor tomorrow and then tag along with Robert and me as we head to Church Hill, Mississippi, and along some other Mississippi backroads. It's going to be a great week!

Hamilton Lake in Claiborne County

There are alligators in Hamilton Lake, but I did not think they would be amongst the lotus blooms and water lilies, but I was mistaken! This fella was discovered right in the thick of them. I am glad I spotted him.

I love the symmetry of the water lilies...perfect circles just floating in space!
Dragonflies are in abundance all around the lake. Here are some of them.


Here are some closeups of the lotus pods. Tell me God doesn't pay attention to detail!

Even in death, the water lilies are stunningly beautiful. There's a life lesson here that I am going to have to mull over for a while. Anyone else have any thoughts? I would love to hear them.

Grand Gulf Cemetery

There's not much left of the town of Grand Gulf in Claiborne County, which figured so prominently in the Civil War. Just a church and cemetery, along with the town's original jail cells, have survived. The cemetery and jail cells are now located on the grounds of the Grand Gulf Military Park. The church is just down the road.

The cemetery is one of my favorites. Light and shadow just dance across the gravestones and, like Cedar Hill Cemetery, I always discover new photos every time I go.

Hamilton Lake in Claiborne County

This lake in the shadow of the cooling tower at Grand Gulf Nuclear Station in Claiborne County is called Hamilton Lake on the map. It is a beautiful lake filled now with thousands and thousands of lotus flowers and lily pads. It is such a spectacular sight and more evidence of God's Glory! You must drive down to see it — it's on Port Road right past where you turn in to go to GGNS. I will have other photos later this week.
