Vicksburg Flood 2011: Aerial view

I flew over downtown Vicksburg on Saturday. Here are some of the shots. It was extremely hazy. Stay tuned later this week for I have lots of more shots to post, including a ride on the Sweet Olive on Saturday afternoon, a walking trek to the top of the Yazoo River Bridge on US 61 North Saturday morning, and photos of the bridges during the thunderstorm at sunrise Saturday morning. Click on each photo to get a better view of the detail.

Day of the Crest: May 19, 2011: 57.1 feet

These photos were taken this morning to record the Mississippi River at its highest ever level in Vicksburg. Photos at the bridge were taken at two different times. These were taken at around 7 a.m. and a batch below was taken at 6 a.m. What a majestic sight the river is.

I have taken photos of the two home above throughout the flood. I will show you the progression of the flood at a later day.

Vicksburg Flood 2011

I am constantly drawn toward the Mississippi River. The massive cloud bank that drifted over the city around dusk was an awesome experience. It closed in the river and felt like it was just going to come right down and settle on top of my head. The third photo in this blog is of the cloud as it passed on by, leaving me with a glorious sunset over the might Mississippi. You kind of had to be there to experience it, I guess. And, by the way, for those who think you have to have a big expensive camera to shoot good photos, well, I have to tell you that the camera doesn't matter. These photos were taken with a Canon Powershot S95, small enough to fit into my shirt pocket. To take pictures of pretty things, the main thing to do is go stand in front of pretty things!
