Capt. Hickenlooper


I love the statue of Capt. Hickenlooper, located near the Illinois Memorial. He carries a pair of binoculars in his hand and was an engineer who was in charge of building many of the trenches and fortifications used during the siege.

    I've often wondered about your many trips onto such hallowed ground---are you not moved sometimes to take off your shoes?

    I'd also like to see his eyes---I think they must have been an intense blue. And like so many men of vision, he does look away, look away.
