Ventured over Tougaloo College's way Saturday morning. These are some of the dorms on campus. This building has a twin, also. It looks like the individual rooms are pre-manufactured pods that were placed in there one by one, but that is just a guess. Looks like a housing concept that made it into reality. Anybody know more?
This is not a typical photo for me, but I have never seen anything like it in my life.
The dorms and the library were all the first phase of what was supposed to be a whole new campus in the 1970s, designed by Gunnar Birkerts and Associates, a Michigan architecture firm. As might be expected, money ran out and these three building were the only parts of the plan built. You can read a little about the building program at Preservation in Mississippi (http://misspreservation.com/2010/02/05/name-this-place-4-5-the-grand-finale/)
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked the buildings, or at least found them interesting. I was horrified by them the first time I saw them, over a decade ago, but they've grown on me. I especially enjoy driving under the dorms. I wonder what they're like to live in though?
ReplyDeleteThey are nasty and are not livable in. All the students do is smoke weed and they are just not livable in anymore. They need to tear it down and build two new buildings just like New Women and that needs to be redown also. Tougaloo know they need to get rid of these nasty poor looking buildings. These kids pay to much for them to be living like this.
